2019 Doctoral Research Scholarships
The New Zealand – China Water Research Centre is funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), and is hosted by Lincoln University, in partnership with AgResearch, Landcare Research, Plant and Food Research, Lincoln Agritech Ltd, and the University of Otago. The mission of the Water Centre is to coordinate collaborations between New Zealand and Chinese scientists from multiple organisations to mitigate water contamination, safeguard water quality, and increase water use efficiency.
Up to 10 PhD projects are available at the New Zealand – China Water Research Centre, funded by the China Scholarships Council. Students will be enrolled at Lincoln University, New Zealand. The scholarship covers four years stipend and travel, and applications are made through the China Research Council.
The scholarships are available immediately. Leading New Zealand researchers are available to supervise excellent students. Available projects are listed below; however, it is possible to develop research programmes based on individual student interests.

- Email the supervisor to discuss your interest in an advertised project, or email the NZCWRC Director, hong.di@lincoln.ac.nz about the possibility of a project that meets your research interests. Please provide details of your relevant education and experience.
- Apply to the relevant New Zealand university clearly stating that you are applying for the CSC-NZCWRC CRCC Joint Funding Programme
- Apply to the China Scholarship Council for a scholarship when you have received a letter of offer from a New Zealand University

Emerging Researcher Fellowship
Up to $40,000 is available to support a New Zealand-based early-career researcher to establish connections with Chinese counterparts. Eligibility and scope of the funding is outlined in the table below. Applications addressing the selection criteria, stating the duration of stay in China, and including a letter of support from the Chinese host organisation and a budget should be sent to Professor Hong J Di. Eligibility - New Zealand fellows must meet the following general eligibility requirements:
- Have completed their PhD studies within seven years at the time of commencing the award
- Have been awarded a doctorate at the time of application
- Be a New Zealand citizen, have permanent residency or be applying for permanent residency
- Have been working or studying in New Zealand in an area relevant to the fellowship activities
- Be able to participate in the nominated fellowship activities at the time and for the duration proposed by the Chinese organisation during the Fellowship
- Have identified suitable Chinese hosts and initiated contact with Chinese organisations to explore their interest in hosting a New Zealand Fellow (evidence provided via letter of intent)
